ACT ONE
This morning, at the school gates.
Parent: One of the kids told [this parent’s child] that *men* were allowed to marry each other. [Child] asked me last night, “Is it true? Can two men marry?” I said I didn’t think it was appropriate to discuss it, but yes, they could. I mean, they’re only six! You just want to preserve their innocence, don’t you? It’s so complicated, and I felt sad that these poor little kids are asking these kind of questions. It might be fine when they’re older, but… Well, it isn’t right to talk about *that* kind of… stuff when they’re so young, is it?
ACT TWO
Our flat, a while ago:
Three-year-old M: Can two women marry?
Me: Yup. And two men. Any two adults who are in love, and aren’t directly related.
M: OK.
